Normal Maytag Dryer Sounds
- Steady humming — the motor running. Normal.
- Tumbling — clothes moving inside the drum. Normal.
- Clicking — the gas valve opening (gas models) or the cycling thermostat. Normal.
- Hissing — the gas burner igniting (gas models). Normal.
- Rattling from the drum — zippers, buttons, or coins hitting the drum. Normal but check pockets before drying.
Sounds That Indicate a Problem
Squealing or Squeaking
A high-pitched squeal that occurs throughout the cycle typically points to a worn drum belt, worn drum rollers, or a failing idler pulley. The belt wraps around the drum and is tensioned by the idler pulley — when either wears, you hear squealing.
- Belt — inspect for fraying, cracking, or glazing. A dryer belt costs under $20 and is one of the most common dryer repairs.
- Idler pulley — holds tension on the belt. A worn bearing in the pulley produces a high-pitched squeal.
- Drum rollers — support the drum as it turns. Worn rollers make a squealing or rumbling noise. Replace all rollers at the same time.
Thumping
A rhythmic thump once per revolution often means a flat spot on a drum roller or a loose object like a belt buckle tumbling inside. Check for objects first. If the thump continues with an empty drum, a drum roller is the likely culprit.
Grinding or Scraping
A metallic grinding or scraping noise indicates the drum glides (felt or plastic pads that the drum rests on at the front) are worn through. When the felt wears away, metal contacts metal. Replace the drum glides promptly before the drum damages the front panel or bulkhead.
Loud Rumbling
A rumbling noise that gets worse over time points to the drum rollers or motor bearings. Run the dryer empty — if the rumble persists, the issue is mechanical, not a laundry item hitting the drum.
When to Call for Service
Belt, idler pulley, and drum roller replacement are manageable repairs for a confident DIYer. Motor bearing replacement and gas valve work should be handled by a qualified Maytag service technician.
Why Professional Service May Be the Right Choice
While many Dryer issues can be addressed with the steps in this guide, there are situations where attempting a DIY repair can make the problem worse or void your warranty. If you've followed the steps above and the issue persists, or if you're not comfortable working with electrical components or water connections, calling a factory-certified technician is the safest and most cost-effective path forward.
Maytag Appliance Solutions technicians are trained directly to Maytag's service specifications. They arrive with the most common OEM replacement parts already on the vehicle, which means most repairs are completed in a single visit — no waiting for parts to be ordered.
Preventing the Problem from Recurring
Most Dryer issues that require repair are preventable with regular maintenance. Key habits that extend appliance life and reduce fault frequency:
- Clean filters regularly. Lint filters, drain pump filters, and water inlet screens accumulate debris over time. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of performance issues and error codes.
- Don't overload. Consistently running your Dryer beyond its rated capacity puts extra stress on the motor, drum bearings, and suspension components.
- Use the correct detergent and amounts. Excess detergent — especially non-HE detergent in HE appliances — causes buildup, mold, and sensor errors over time.
- Check hoses and connections annually. Inspect inlet and drain hoses for cracks, kinks, or loose connections at least once a year, especially if your appliance is more than five years old.
- Level the appliance. An unlevel Dryer vibrates excessively during operation, accelerating wear on internal components and causing noise and balance errors.
Maytag Warranty and Service Coverage
Maytag offers a standard one-year parts and labor warranty on most appliances, with extended coverage on specific components. If your appliance is still within its manufacturer warranty period, contact Maytag directly before scheduling an independent repair, as unauthorized service may affect warranty coverage.
For appliances outside the warranty period, Maytag Appliance Solutions provides a 30 day parts and labor warranty on every repair we complete. All replacement parts are genuine Maytag OEM components sourced directly from Maytag's authorized parts network.
Stuck or unsure? Don't risk it.
If at any point a step doesn't match what you're seeing, stop and call in a pro. DIY gone wrong can cost more than a professional diagnosis — and our techs carry most Maytag parts on every vehicle.
