Bake Element
The bake element is the large coil on the oven floor that glows red during baking. It is the most common failure point in any oven.
- Visually inspect the element for obvious breaks, blistering, or burn spots
- A failed element will have a visible break or charred area
- Test with a multimeter: disconnect power and test the element terminals for continuity. An infinite reading means the element has failed.
- Bake element replacement is typically straightforward — unscrew two mounting screws, disconnect two wires, connect the new element
Temperature Sensor (RTD)
The temperature sensor is a probe inside the oven cavity (usually at the upper back) that reports oven temperature to the control board. If it reads incorrectly:
- The oven may over-heat or under-heat
- Test with a multimeter: at room temperature, a good sensor reads approximately 1,000-1,100 ohms resistance
- Maytag displays an F3 or F4 error code when the sensor reads out of range
True Convection Fan
Maytag wall ovens with True Convection have a fan and dedicated rear heating element. If the oven heats but temperature is uneven (hot spots, cold spots), the convection fan motor may be failing. Listen for the fan during convection mode — it should run continuously and quietly. A fan that stops intermittently or makes grinding noises needs replacement.
Power Preheat
Maytag wall ovens with Power Preheat use both the bake and broil elements simultaneously to reach temperature faster. If preheating takes longer than expected, make sure Power Preheat is enabled and verify that the broil element is working (it should glow when Power Preheat is active).
Calibration Offset
All ovens are allowed to vary up to 25 degrees F from the set temperature. If your oven consistently runs a little hot or cold by the same amount, you may not have a failed component — you may just need to adjust the calibration offset in the settings menu. Check your Maytag owner’s manual for the calibration procedure for your model.
Control Board
If the element and sensor test good, the control board may not be sending the correct signals. This is diagnosed by checking for error codes and measuring voltage output at the element relay. Control board diagnosis requires a qualified Maytag service technician.
Why Professional Service May Be the Right Choice
While many Wall Oven issues can be addressed with the steps in this guide, there are situations where attempting a DIY repair can make the problem worse or void your warranty. If you've followed the steps above and the issue persists, or if you're not comfortable working with electrical components or water connections, calling a factory-certified technician is the safest and most cost-effective path forward.
Maytag Appliance Solutions technicians are trained directly to Maytag's service specifications. They arrive with the most common OEM replacement parts already on the vehicle, which means most repairs are completed in a single visit — no waiting for parts to be ordered.
Preventing the Problem from Recurring
Most Wall Oven issues that require repair are preventable with regular maintenance. Key habits that extend appliance life and reduce fault frequency:
- Clean filters regularly. Lint filters, drain pump filters, and water inlet screens accumulate debris over time. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of performance issues and error codes.
- Don't overload. Consistently running your Wall Oven beyond its rated capacity puts extra stress on the motor, drum bearings, and suspension components.
- Use the correct detergent and amounts. Excess detergent — especially non-HE detergent in HE appliances — causes buildup, mold, and sensor errors over time.
- Check hoses and connections annually. Inspect inlet and drain hoses for cracks, kinks, or loose connections at least once a year, especially if your appliance is more than five years old.
- Level the appliance. An unlevel Wall Oven vibrates excessively during operation, accelerating wear on internal components and causing noise and balance errors.
Maytag Warranty and Service Coverage
Maytag offers a standard one-year parts and labor warranty on most appliances, with extended coverage on specific components. If your appliance is still within its manufacturer warranty period, contact Maytag directly before scheduling an independent repair, as unauthorized service may affect warranty coverage.
For appliances outside the warranty period, Maytag Appliance Solutions provides a 30 day parts and labor warranty on every repair we complete. All replacement parts are genuine Maytag OEM components sourced directly from Maytag's authorized parts network.
Stuck or unsure? Don't risk it.
If at any point a step doesn't match what you're seeing, stop and call in a pro. DIY gone wrong can cost more than a professional diagnosis — and our techs carry most Maytag parts on every vehicle.
