Understanding Maytag True Convection
Maytag ranges with True Convection use a third heating element behind a fan at the rear of the oven cavity. Unlike standard convection that simply circulates hot air from the bake element, True Convection produces its own heat at the fan for more uniform temperature from rack to rack. If this fan motor fails or the rear element weakens, uneven cooking results.
- Listen for the fan running during convection mode — silence or intermittent operation indicates a motor issue
- Check the rear element through the oven window — it should glow evenly when convection is active
Power Preheat
Maytag ranges with Power Preheat use both the bake and broil elements simultaneously to reach the set temperature faster. If your oven seems to take forever to preheat or food is not browning correctly, verify that Power Preheat is enabled in the oven settings. Also confirm the broil element is functional — if it has failed, Power Preheat cannot work.
Bake Element
The bake element on the oven floor glows red during standard baking. It is the most common failure point in any oven.
- Inspect for visible breaks, blistering, or burn spots
- A failed element will have a visible break or charred area
- Test with a multimeter for continuity — an open reading means the element has failed
- Element replacement is typically straightforward — unscrew two screws, disconnect two wires, install the new element
Temperature Sensor
The temperature sensor (RTD probe) is located inside the oven cavity, usually at the upper rear. It reports the actual oven temperature to the control board. At room temperature, a good sensor reads approximately 1,000-1,100 ohms. If it reads incorrectly, the oven may over-heat or under-heat. An F3 or F4 error code indicates the sensor is out of range.
Gas Burner Issues
If gas burners produce uneven or yellow flames:
- Clean the burner ports with a straightened paper clip — food spills block the tiny holes
- Ensure the burner cap is seated flat and centered on the burner head
- Check that the gas supply is adequate and the regulator is set correctly for your fuel type (natural gas or LP)
Calibration Offset
All ovens can vary up to 25 degrees F from the set temperature. If your oven consistently runs hot or cold by the same amount, adjust the calibration offset through the settings menu. Consult your Maytag owner’s manual for the calibration procedure for your specific model.
Why Professional Service May Be the Right Choice
While many Range issues can be addressed with the steps in this guide, there are situations where attempting a DIY repair can make the problem worse or void your warranty. If you've followed the steps above and the issue persists, or if you're not comfortable working with electrical components or water connections, calling a factory-certified technician is the safest and most cost-effective path forward.
Maytag Appliance Solutions technicians are trained directly to Maytag's service specifications. They arrive with the most common OEM replacement parts already on the vehicle, which means most repairs are completed in a single visit — no waiting for parts to be ordered.
Preventing the Problem from Recurring
Most Range issues that require repair are preventable with regular maintenance. Key habits that extend appliance life and reduce fault frequency:
- Clean filters regularly. Lint filters, drain pump filters, and water inlet screens accumulate debris over time. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of performance issues and error codes.
- Don't overload. Consistently running your Range beyond its rated capacity puts extra stress on the motor, drum bearings, and suspension components.
- Use the correct detergent and amounts. Excess detergent — especially non-HE detergent in HE appliances — causes buildup, mold, and sensor errors over time.
- Check hoses and connections annually. Inspect inlet and drain hoses for cracks, kinks, or loose connections at least once a year, especially if your appliance is more than five years old.
- Level the appliance. An unlevel Range vibrates excessively during operation, accelerating wear on internal components and causing noise and balance errors.
Maytag Warranty and Service Coverage
Maytag offers a standard one-year parts and labor warranty on most appliances, with extended coverage on specific components. If your appliance is still within its manufacturer warranty period, contact Maytag directly before scheduling an independent repair, as unauthorized service may affect warranty coverage.
For appliances outside the warranty period, Maytag Appliance Solutions provides a 30 day parts and labor warranty on every repair we complete. All replacement parts are genuine Maytag OEM components sourced directly from Maytag's authorized parts network.
Stuck or unsure? Don't risk it.
If at any point a step doesn't match what you're seeing, stop and call in a pro. DIY gone wrong can cost more than a professional diagnosis — and our techs carry most Maytag parts on every vehicle.
