The Most Overlooked Fix: Water Temperature
Maytag dishwashers are designed to operate with inlet water at 120 degrees F. If your water heater is set lower, or if the dishwasher is far from the water heater, cold water enters the cycle and detergent does not dissolve properly. Run the hot water at the kitchen sink until it is steaming before starting the dishwasher — this purges the cold water from the supply line.
Check and Clean the Filters
The Dual Power Filtration system catches food particles to prevent them from redepositing on dishes. But a partially blocked filter also restricts water pressure to the spray arms. Even a filter that looks “mostly clean” can reduce cleaning performance. Clean both filters monthly — remove, rinse under running water, scrub with a soft brush, and reinstall.
Inspect and Clear the Spray Arms
The spray arms have small holes that direct water onto dishes. These holes clog with mineral deposits and food debris over time.
- Remove both spray arms (twist off the lower arm, lift out the upper arm).
- Use a toothpick or thin wire to clear each hole.
- Rinse under water and verify water flows through all holes freely.
- Reinstall and confirm they spin freely without obstruction.
Detergent and Rinse Aid
- Use a quality dishwasher detergent pod or powder — liquid gel detergent tends to leave residue on dishes
- Always use rinse aid — it prevents water spots and cloudiness on glassware
- Keep the rinse aid dispenser filled and adjust the dispensing level if spots persist
- For hard water areas, run a dishwasher cleaner tablet through an empty cycle monthly
Loading Correctly
- Face heavily soiled surfaces toward the spray arms — do not hide them against the rack walls
- Glasses and cups go upside down on the top rack at an angle so water drains off
- Do not nest bowls or spoons — nested items block water contact
- Ensure nothing is blocking the spray arm rotation — a tall pan handle or cutting board can stop the arm
White Film or Cloudiness on Glassware
White film is almost always hard water mineral deposits. In hard water areas, a dishwasher descaler or water softener may be necessary. Check if the film wipes off with white vinegar — if it does, it is mineral buildup. If it does not wipe off, it may be permanent etching from a combination of soft water and high heat, which cannot be reversed.
Why Professional Service May Be the Right Choice
While many Dishwasher issues can be addressed with the steps in this guide, there are situations where attempting a DIY repair can make the problem worse or void your warranty. If you've followed the steps above and the issue persists, or if you're not comfortable working with electrical components or water connections, calling a factory-certified technician is the safest and most cost-effective path forward.
Maytag Appliance Solutions technicians are trained directly to Maytag's service specifications. They arrive with the most common OEM replacement parts already on the vehicle, which means most repairs are completed in a single visit — no waiting for parts to be ordered.
Preventing the Problem from Recurring
Most Dishwasher issues that require repair are preventable with regular maintenance. Key habits that extend appliance life and reduce fault frequency:
- Clean filters regularly. Lint filters, drain pump filters, and water inlet screens accumulate debris over time. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of performance issues and error codes.
- Don't overload. Consistently running your Dishwasher beyond its rated capacity puts extra stress on the motor, drum bearings, and suspension components.
- Use the correct detergent and amounts. Excess detergent — especially non-HE detergent in HE appliances — causes buildup, mold, and sensor errors over time.
- Check hoses and connections annually. Inspect inlet and drain hoses for cracks, kinks, or loose connections at least once a year, especially if your appliance is more than five years old.
- Level the appliance. An unlevel Dishwasher vibrates excessively during operation, accelerating wear on internal components and causing noise and balance errors.
Maytag Warranty and Service Coverage
Maytag offers a standard one-year parts and labor warranty on most appliances, with extended coverage on specific components. If your appliance is still within its manufacturer warranty period, contact Maytag directly before scheduling an independent repair, as unauthorized service may affect warranty coverage.
For appliances outside the warranty period, Maytag Appliance Solutions provides a 30 day parts and labor warranty on every repair we complete. All replacement parts are genuine Maytag OEM components sourced directly from Maytag's authorized parts network.
Stuck or unsure? Don't risk it.
If at any point a step doesn't match what you're seeing, stop and call in a pro. DIY gone wrong can cost more than a professional diagnosis — and our techs carry most Maytag parts on every vehicle.
