Why Leveling Matters
During the spin cycle, a Maytag washer spins at speeds up to 1,000 RPM or higher. Even a slight tilt causes the drum to vibrate unevenly, which gets amplified at high speed. The result is excessive noise, the washer walking across the floor, and potential damage to internal components over time.
Tools You Need
- A standard bubble level
- An adjustable wrench or pliers
- A helper to tilt the washer if needed
Leveling Procedure
- Place the level on top of the washer, running it side to side. Note which side is low.
- Turn the level front to back and note whether the front or rear is low.
- Adjust the front feet by turning them clockwise to raise or counterclockwise to lower. Each foot can be adjusted independently.
- On most Maytag models, the rear feet are self-leveling. Tilt the washer forward about 3-4 inches and let it drop back down firmly. The rear feet will adjust automatically.
- Place the level on top again and verify the bubble is centered in both directions.
- Try to rock the washer by pushing on the corners. It should feel solid with no wobble. If it rocks, one foot is not making full contact with the floor.
Floor Considerations
- Concrete floors — ideal for washers. Solid and vibration-resistant.
- Wood floors — can amplify vibration. A 3/4-inch plywood platform or anti-vibration pads under each foot reduce noise and movement significantly.
- Pedestals — Maytag laundry pedestals raise the washer for easier loading and add storage. Re-level after installing a pedestal.
Drain Hose Installation
The drain hose should be inserted 6-8 inches into the standpipe and secured with the hose form provided. The standpipe must be at least 39 inches above the floor but no more than 96 inches. If the hose is inserted too far or the standpipe is too low, water siphons back into the washer during the cycle.
Supply Hose Tips
- Use braided stainless steel supply hoses — they resist bursting far better than rubber hoses
- Replace supply hoses every 5 years regardless of condition
- Turn off both supply valves when the washer will not be used for an extended period (vacation, etc.)
Why Professional Service May Be the Right Choice
While many Washer issues can be addressed with the steps in this guide, there are situations where attempting a DIY repair can make the problem worse or void your warranty. If you've followed the steps above and the issue persists, or if you're not comfortable working with electrical components or water connections, calling a factory-certified technician is the safest and most cost-effective path forward.
Maytag Appliance Solutions technicians are trained directly to Maytag's service specifications. They arrive with the most common OEM replacement parts already on the vehicle, which means most repairs are completed in a single visit — no waiting for parts to be ordered.
Preventing the Problem from Recurring
Most Washer issues that require repair are preventable with regular maintenance. Key habits that extend appliance life and reduce fault frequency:
- Clean filters regularly. Lint filters, drain pump filters, and water inlet screens accumulate debris over time. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of performance issues and error codes.
- Don't overload. Consistently running your Washer beyond its rated capacity puts extra stress on the motor, drum bearings, and suspension components.
- Use the correct detergent and amounts. Excess detergent — especially non-HE detergent in HE appliances — causes buildup, mold, and sensor errors over time.
- Check hoses and connections annually. Inspect inlet and drain hoses for cracks, kinks, or loose connections at least once a year, especially if your appliance is more than five years old.
- Level the appliance. An unlevel Washer vibrates excessively during operation, accelerating wear on internal components and causing noise and balance errors.
Maytag Warranty and Service Coverage
Maytag offers a standard one-year parts and labor warranty on most appliances, with extended coverage on specific components. If your appliance is still within its manufacturer warranty period, contact Maytag directly before scheduling an independent repair, as unauthorized service may affect warranty coverage.
For appliances outside the warranty period, Maytag Appliance Solutions provides a 30 day parts and labor warranty on every repair we complete. All replacement parts are genuine Maytag OEM components sourced directly from Maytag's authorized parts network.
Stuck or unsure? Don't risk it.
If at any point a step doesn't match what you're seeing, stop and call in a pro. DIY gone wrong can cost more than a professional diagnosis — and our techs carry most Maytag parts on every vehicle.
