How to Read Maytag Washer Error Codes
When your Maytag washer detects a problem, it stops the cycle and displays an error code on the control panel. The code narrows down the cause so you can decide whether it is a quick fix or requires a service call.
Common Error Codes
F0 E1 or F0 E2 — Load Size Error
The washer cannot detect a load or the load is too small. Add more items and restart. If washing a single large item, redistribute it evenly in the drum.
F5 E2 — Door Lock Fault
The door failed to lock within the allowed time. Check that the door is fully closed and nothing is caught in the latch or gasket. If the latch clicks but the code persists, the door lock assembly or wiring may need replacement.
F7 E1 — Motor Speed Sensing Error
The motor is not reaching the expected speed. This can be caused by an overloaded drum, a worn drive belt, or a failing motor. Reduce the load size and restart. If the code returns with a normal-sized load, call for service.
F8 E1 — Low Water Flow
The washer is not filling with enough water. Check that both hot and cold water supply valves behind the washer are fully open. Inspect the inlet hose screens for sediment buildup — turn off the water, disconnect the hoses, and clean the small mesh screens at the valve connections.
F9 E1 — Long Drain
The washer took too long to drain. Check the drain hose for kinks, clear the drain pump filter (front-load models), and make sure the standpipe or sink drain is not clogged.
F8 E2 — Dispenser Fault
The detergent dispenser is not operating correctly. Remove the dispenser drawer and clean out any caked-on detergent or fabric softener. Rinse thoroughly with hot water before reinstalling.
Resetting Error Codes
Most error codes clear when you press the Power button, wait 60 seconds, and restart the washer. If the code returns immediately after restarting, the underlying problem has not been resolved. Unplug the washer for 5 minutes for a full reset. If the code still comes back, schedule service with a qualified Maytag technician.
Why Professional Service May Be the Right Choice
While many Washer issues can be addressed with the steps in this guide, there are situations where attempting a DIY repair can make the problem worse or void your warranty. If you've followed the steps above and the issue persists, or if you're not comfortable working with electrical components or water connections, calling a factory-certified technician is the safest and most cost-effective path forward.
Maytag Appliance Solutions technicians are trained directly to Maytag's service specifications. They arrive with the most common OEM replacement parts already on the vehicle, which means most repairs are completed in a single visit — no waiting for parts to be ordered.
Preventing the Problem from Recurring
Most Washer issues that require repair are preventable with regular maintenance. Key habits that extend appliance life and reduce fault frequency:
- Clean filters regularly. Lint filters, drain pump filters, and water inlet screens accumulate debris over time. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of performance issues and error codes.
- Don't overload. Consistently running your Washer beyond its rated capacity puts extra stress on the motor, drum bearings, and suspension components.
- Use the correct detergent and amounts. Excess detergent — especially non-HE detergent in HE appliances — causes buildup, mold, and sensor errors over time.
- Check hoses and connections annually. Inspect inlet and drain hoses for cracks, kinks, or loose connections at least once a year, especially if your appliance is more than five years old.
- Level the appliance. An unlevel Washer vibrates excessively during operation, accelerating wear on internal components and causing noise and balance errors.
Maytag Warranty and Service Coverage
Maytag offers a standard one-year parts and labor warranty on most appliances, with extended coverage on specific components. If your appliance is still within its manufacturer warranty period, contact Maytag directly before scheduling an independent repair, as unauthorized service may affect warranty coverage.
For appliances outside the warranty period, Maytag Appliance Solutions provides a 30 day parts and labor warranty on every repair we complete. All replacement parts are genuine Maytag OEM components sourced directly from Maytag's authorized parts network.
Stuck or unsure? Don't risk it.
If at any point a step doesn't match what you're seeing, stop and call in a pro. DIY gone wrong can cost more than a professional diagnosis — and our techs carry most Maytag parts on every vehicle.
