About This Recall
Maytag Corporation voluntarily recalled approximately 42,000 Maytag brand electric coil ranges. The front coil burners could shift during use, causing electrical arcing between the burner terminal and the drip pan, creating a fire hazard.
Maytag received nine reports of incidents, including four minor fires. No injuries or property damage were reported.
Affected Models
The ranges were sold nationwide through appliance dealers from October 2003 through September 2004 for between $400 and $700. Model numbers begin with MER5551 or MER5751, with the serial number located on the frame under the cooktop.
Repair
Use only the rear burners until the repair is completed. Maytag will provide a free in-home repair to replace the front burner terminal block assembly.
What to do next
Consumers should immediately stop using the front coil burners on these ranges and contact Maytag for a free in-home repair. Use only the rear burners until the repair is completed by a certified technician.
