About This Recall
Maytag, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, recalled approximately 1.6 million Maytag, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa, and Crosley brand refrigerators manufactured between 2001 and 2004.
An electrical failure in the relay component that turns the compressor on and off can cause the refrigerator to overheat, posing a serious fire hazard. Maytag received 41 reports of relay failures resulting in fires, including 16 reports of extensive property damage.
Finding Your Model Number
The model number label is located inside the refrigerator compartment, typically on the ceiling or side wall. Affected side-by-side and top-freezer refrigerators were sold nationwide from January 2001 through January 2004 for between $350 and $1,600.
What to Do
Contact Maytag for a free in-home inspection and repair. The defective relay will be replaced with a redesigned unit. Continue using the refrigerator until the repair is completed — unplugging is not necessary.
What to do next
Consumers should immediately contact Maytag to schedule a free in-home repair by an authorized service provider. The relay will be replaced at no cost to the consumer. Do not unplug the refrigerator — continue normal use until repaired.
